Subject: X-COM 2 and GUS Midi?
Sorry if this has been covered before, but MIDI isn't working
with this one (and a few others). It says in the readme that I must have a
FULL set of patches on the HD. Why wouldn't I? I have a GUS Max, and
haven't changed anything unusual. IRQ 5, DMA 1...any help appreciated.

Subject: Discworld : I can't get any Sound Effects
Hello out there,
Has anyone succeeded in getting soundeffects out of discworld?
I've tried it with my GUS and my Soundblaster, and a friend
with his Sonic Sound and GUS ACE, but There's just no
soundeffects coming out of this game. Any suggestions?
Anyone knows if there's a update patch available?
Thanks

Subject: Volume problem with small DMA buffer
This seems to be a common problem -
when playing .AVI files (and sometimes .WAVs) the volume is set to a low
value. Pausing the output, then commencing usually brings the volume up
to its normal level, as defined by the mixer settings.
I have found that having a DMA playback buffer of 3072+ gives the required
volume level the first time the file is played, but anything less causes
this annoying problem.
Is this a problem with the UltraSound drivers (mostly from v2.06a to v4.11
disk sets), or with the Windows drivers itself? I would really like to have
a small buffer (as this seems to provide the best video performance and
alleviates the choppy-AVI syndrome) but cannot because of the volume drop-out.
Anyone know a (hopefully RSN) fix for this?

Subject: MegaEm 3.04b crashes and displays a single 'U'.
Just as the header says - MegaEm 3.04b crashes (halts/reboots) my system
and just displays a single 'U' at the start of a new line. Is the program
trying to tell me that UltraSound is not configured properly/is incompatible
with the current software/everything is OK!? The same goes for 3.03b.
I have tried this with IndyCar Racing (which is the best racer available IMHO),
and have now discovered the AIL drivers that do work exceedingly well, but the
fact that MegaEm failed does not bode well.
My settings are 240,7,7,3,7 and there's also an SB16 (a220 i5 d1 h5 p330 t6).
I have set MPU address in MegaEm to 300 to avoid the conflict.
What gives?

URK! You have your MIDI and your Digital set to the same IRQ!
Of _course_ it doesn't work, I'm surprised anything works with a setup
like that...
Either set it to 11,5 (if you intend to use SB
compatibility... don't use 11,7 because your printer uses 7) or 11,12
or something... they need to be different. I'm surprised the setup
program lets you do it that way...
And your GUS DMA doesn't make a difference with SBOS... it'll
use DMA 1 anyway, which is kinda anoying if you have a real SB in
there (like me!).

They do _NOT_ need to be different. The GUS can share IRQs with
itself. It doesn't matter where the MIDI IRQ is anyway, unless he's
playing a keyboard while playing LSL6, no MIDI IRQs will be generated.

Subject: Software versions for v2.4 board?
I have a GUS v2.4 board with 1M RAM. My motherboard is an Intel Pentium 100Mhz
(Zappa) with 8M RAM (and yes it does not have parity RAM and yes it does
support NMI). Can any body suggest the best versions of drivers, utilities,
software, etc. for this combo (specifically the v2.4 GUS). I have been a
subscriber to this digest since forever and have updated my software along the
way. I have some annoyances (depends on the day whether they are minor or
major :-) that I wonder if I've caused by upgrading software beyond my board
revision number.
FYI - annoyances include:
1) no sound from AVI file until click on volume control in Mixer
in Windows 3.1 (use to work at one point ?).
2) loss of digital sounds in SimCity 2000 (using loadpats, etc.) but
music is fine (once again use to work).
3) Silverball with native GUS support stops all sounds shortly after
start up. Stopped working with my upgrade from my 386 to Pentium.
4) DOOM v1.666 plays music but digital sounds lost with MB upgrade
(mind you, the digital sounds were there with the 386 but lousy).
Anyway, any help on "the best" software versions for my board revision would
be appreciated. It sure would be nice if Gravis would help those that
originally helped them by buying and supporting their 1st boards out. I under-
stand it's business, however a really good upgrade offer would be appreciated.

You need to unzip the GUS drivers that came with LSL6 (disk version). I
can't remember the filename, but look at the readme file that came with
the game. I think the file is also a self-extracting ZIP, so you don't
need to PKUNZIP it. After unzipping it, type this:
ultramid -c -m100
Then run install and select Ultrasound for music and sfx, and you're all
set to go. Just don't forget to type that line again the next time you
play again.
Hope this helps.

Gus Folks,
Does anyone know of a utility that can detect whether a motherboard
supports NMI or not? This could be handy when looking for a new PC, to
make sure that SBOS will work ok...

Maybe it's problems with 32bit OSes. NT still doesnt have drivers and
OS/2 has those Manley s/w drivers and "alpha" drivers from Gravis itself.

I wonder what drove Gravis to follow this policy. I remember when
Gravis was open with their driver support. It seems like a new big fish
decided to reverse that policy. Not very prudent.
You know what will piss people off more than the lack of Win95 driver
support now? The fact that when Win95 ships, there is a high chance that
Gravis won't have the driver ready or debugged. So people like me who
want to get the Win95 distribution on CD-ROM will be forced to get a
stupid patch disk with the GUS drivers. Way to go Gravis.

To the guy who requested help for that game. I suggest you read
the G-List which is available through me.
Anyways, there is a file called GUSDRV.EXE in the directory. Just
run it and it will uncompress ULTRAMID. Load ULTRAMID and then go
select "Ultrasound" in the install program.

Running Gus in warcraft, get the patch,
from v1.15 warcraft works fine with gus.
I belive the laterst patch for warcraft is v1.21
And now another matter...
It would be nice if someone took the time to compile a list
of game companies (origin/sierra etc...) emails.
It would be nice to know where to complain when a certain
game doesnt work as it should.
BTW: Anyone played XCom-2 : Terror from the deep with GUS?
My gus (v3.4) gives out some noise each time the game
loads/enter the stratagy portion of the game.
And the animation seq. are not shown (CD-Version).
But when i use my SB v1.5 the animations work just fine.
Oh, if people finished the game and would like to see
the animations with the GUS, load SBOS, copy the entire
game to the hard disk (80mb), and go into the anim dir,
and replace the "logo.???" files with the other files,
this way you get to see what you missed.

Subject: Flight of the Amazon Queen
Hi, GUSsers!
I recently installed the Flight Of The Amazon
Queen. I had problems with it it since it was
a DOS4GW game. Megaem wouldn't work and SBOS
crashed the game. Still I wanted the sound
effects to work (for the music I use SCC-1).
I checked the version of the DOS4GW.EXE and it
turned out to be v. 1.92. I checked if I had
any newer version and found one that came
with Cubic Player 1.0 (the bigger one, >700K).
It was 1.95. I copied it over the older one
in the Queen directory and now the game
worked with the SBOS!
I thought this information could be useful for someone
so I posted it to the digest. The rest of you
without the game: this method may solve some
other similar problems.
Oh, BTW I was using GUS Max. I've been GUS-user since
the original GUS (rev 2.2). My original GUS's serial
number was 866(!) before upgrading to the MAX due to
the CD-ROM-compatibility.
